President Donald Trump said Tuesday that the US federal government will now use the term “superintelligence” to refer to artificial intelligence and that this designation will appear in all government documents.
Trump recently conducted an online poll to find out what his supporters would like artificial intelligence to be renamed, but “superintelligence” was not among the proposed options, writes the Washington Times.
Why did he choose this change?
The US president announced the new name during a speech at the UN General Assembly.
“From now on, all United States documents and, I hope, documents around the world will be amended to use the much more accurate term ‘superintelligence.’ Instead of ‘artificial,’ it will be ‘superintelligence ,'” Trump said.
“In other words, welcome to the new world of superintelligence ,” he added. “It sounds a lot better. It’s a lot better and it’s a lot more accurate.”
“Now I’m saying: whoever wins the IS, whoever wins the superintelligence, wins,” Trump said.
He said the name change was necessary because the word “artificial” makes the technology seem “fake.”
“It’s not fake. It’s actually amazing, but we have to be careful. It’s actually the opposite of what that term suggests ,” Trump said, calling the description of the technology as “artificial” misleading.
What were the other options?
In the poll published on social media, Trump proposed “superior intelligence” (SI), “extreme intelligence” (EI) and “supreme intelligence” (SI) as options for the new name. The president gave users on X and Truth Social the opportunity to vote for their preferred name.
At the UN, Trump dismissed fears about artificial intelligence as a “hoax,” ignoring warnings from tech industry experts that the technology is developing at a pace that companies in the field have difficulty understanding. He compared these warnings to those about the environment.
“The exact same people who said we would all be dead in 12 years because of global warming – a name that was later changed to climate change, because the planet was cooling, not warming, and no one died – are the same people who are now saying that artificial intelligence will kill us all, that robots will attack us and that everything will be a total disaster ,” Trump said.
