ChatGPT is a generative artificial intelligence chatbot developed by OpenAI. Launched in November 2022, it is designed to hold human-like conversations and perform a wide variety of text-based tasks.

Core Functionality

  • Conversational AI: It uses Large Language Models (LLMs)—specifically the “GPT” (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) family—to understand context, answer follow-up questions, admit mistakes, and challenge incorrect premises.

  • Versatility: Beyond simple Q&A, it can write essays, generate creative stories, compose poetry, debug and write computer code, summarize documents, and translate languages.

  • Multimodal Capabilities: Depending on the version, ChatGPT can process and generate not just text, but also images and audio.

How It Works

  • Training: It is trained on vast amounts of data from the internet (books, articles, code, and conversations) to identify patterns in language. It learns to predict the most helpful next word or sequence of words in a response.

  • RLHF: It is refined using Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF), where human trainers rank AI responses to help the model learn to be more helpful, harmless, and honest.

Key Limitations

  • Hallucinations: ChatGPT can sometimes generate information that sounds very convincing but is factually incorrect or “hallucinated.”

  • Accuracy: It does not “know” things in the way a human does; it predicts outputs based on statistical patterns. It is recommended that users verify important information.

  • Bias: Because it is trained on internet data, it may occasionally reflect the biases present in that data.

  • Not a Search Engine: While it can provide information, it operates differently from a traditional search engine. It may not always provide real-time, verified sources in the same way.
